Resistant Nosocomial Enterococcal Infections

چکیده
Enterococcus faecalis, formerly classified as Streptococcus faecalis, belongs to Lancefield group D and is frequently isolated from nosocomial infections. Of the nosocomial infections reported to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in its National Nosocomial Infection Survey (NNIS), enterococci were isolated from 11% of cases. Frequently, E. faecalis is recovered as one of several kinds of bacteria causing infections complicating abdominal or pelvic surgery; in such situations, its role is difficult to assess. On the other hand, it is clearly a pathogen when it is isolated from a normally sterile site, such as the urinary tract, serous cavities, the subarachnoid space, or the blood. Enteroccus spp are regarded as a separate genus based on DNA homology; they are identified in the clinical microbiology laboratory by their ability to grow in media containing 40% bile, cleave esculin, and grow in broth containing 6.5% NaCl. Most laboratories do not attempt to speciate enterococci. Enterococci currently account for 9% of all nosocomial bacteremias that occur at the University of Michigan Hospital and 14% of all bacteremias that occur at the Ann Arbor Veterans Administration Hospital.

Nosocomial Infection with Vancomycin-dependent Enterococci1
We report three patients infected with unique strains of vancomycin-dependent enterococci. Two were first infected by genetically identical strains of vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE). All three patients had much greater exposure to vancomycin and third-generation cephalosporins than did two control groups (patients infected with VRE and hospitalized patients without enterococcal infectio...

Enterococci have traditionally regarded as low grade pathogens, have emerged as an increasingly important cause of nosocomial infections in the last decade. Although about a dozen enterococcus species have been identified, only two are responsible for the majority of human infections, i.e., Enterococcus faecalis and E. faecium. The most common nosocomial infections produced by these organisms a...

Background and Objective: Enterococcal infections are considered the most common nosocomial infections. Nowadays, enterococci show high resistance to common antibiotics, especially vancomycin. Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium is one of the most common nosocomial infections, which is included in the World Health Organization priority pathogens list for research and development of new an...
متن کاملGlycopeptide resistance in enterococci.
The selective pressure resulting from the extensive use of antibiotics over the last 50 years has led to the emergence of bacterial resistance and to the dissemination of resistance genes among pathogenic microorganisms. Consequently, we are now at serious risk of suffering intractable, life-threatening infections. The progressive emergence and rapid dissemination of resistance to glycopeptides...

Enterococci are common inhabitants of intestinal tracts of humans and animal are consider as important causes of hospital acquired infection. They are the second most common cause of nosocomial infections and the third most common cause of nosocomial bacteremia (Ike, et al., 1987). Within recent years, a great deal has been learned about the epidemiology and risk factors for nosocomial enteroco...
متن کاملEnterococci in orthopaedic infections: Who is at risk getting infected?
Some orthopaedic patients might be at risk for enterococcal infections and might benefit from adapted perioperative prophylaxis. METHODS We performed a single-center cohort of adult patients with orthopaedic infections. RESULTS Among 2740 infection episodes, 665 surgeries (24%) involved osteosynthesis material, including total joint arthroplasties. The recommended perioperative prophylaxis ...
